Abstract

It is inexplicably strange, but true even today that ignorance, prejudice and credulity overwhelmingly prevail upon science-derived knowledge in many spheres of our day-to-day lives.  That indeed has unfortunately been the case with coffee drinking. While hundreds of peer-reviewed original scientific papers unequivocally demonstrate that coffee with hundreds of anti-oxidant ingredients is healthful, the widely circulated fallacy is that it is harmful and carcinogenic. The purpose of this article is to illustrate with scientific literature that contrary to false notions, coffee drinking reduces the risk of incidence of several kinds of cancers, diabetes type 2 and a few neurological disorders occurring in the elderly people. More importantly, scientific studies have revealed possible physicochemical and biochemical mechanisms underlying the observed healthful effects of coffee.
